The AMWA Certificate in Medical Editing is designed for beginning to mid-level medical communicators who want to enhance and fine-tune their medical editing skills.

Medical editors provide an essential service, creating, reviewing, and refining a variety of communications. These include regulatory documents, patient education materials, scientific publications, and other health communications. In addition to correcting spelling, grammar, and punctuation, editors act as bridge between writers and readers by improving organization, untangling confusing text, and eliminating repetition. It’s important work, and excellent medical editors are in demand. Careers in medical editing require a solid understanding of writing mechanics and familiarity with the material, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with writers to enhance the accuracy and readability of communications.

This program comprises 11 learning modules that may be completed in any order. Each module includes a short, ungraded knowledge check. Participants have one year of access upon enrollment. Successful completion of all modules earns a professional certificate.
After completing the AMWA Certificate in Medical Editing, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and correct mechanical errors according to relevant style guides
  • Identify and correct problems of clarity, logic, transitions, organization, and word usage
  • Edit tables and graphs for clarity, accuracy, and style
  • Query the author with specific and diplomatically stated questions and suggested changes
